Kisauni Environmental Projects

Kisauni Environment Project has been there for 2.5 years(Jan 2012-Sept 2014). The project covers Kisauni District and is funded by DANIDA through CDTF and the entire project costs 20.3 Million Ksh.

OBJECTIVES OF KISAUNI ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT (KEP)

  1. Promote and adopt renewable energy in KYP and the wider community to reduce the cost of Electricity. Through the installation of solar panels into the institution electricity cost has been cut down by 90%
  2. Adapting to climate change through improved water sources, water harvesting, tree planting and Recycling waste. The school donated tools(Mkokoteni, Spades, Rakes) for managing waste. Through selling bottles, women selling ornaments and making bags out of recycled plasting waste.
  3. Improving Environmental Governance, Livelihoods and reducing emissions through improved solid waste management. The school has managed to educate and train 27 groups; amongst them  being women, youth and people living with HIV/Aids

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Installed solar system to provide 65% green energy to KYP. Completed on 7th January 2014 and Worth Kshs. 5,864,100.00
  • Six 10,000 Litre tanks installed at KYP
  • Community Water Access Point
  • 57,500 trees were planted between 2012 and 2013
  • Training The Community on issues of governance and Environment
  • Donation of waste management equipment to Groups

IMPACTS

  1. No power blackouts- interference of school operation (KYP)
  2. Improved sanitation at KYP
  3. Community gets water at an affordable price
  4. Increased awareness of importance of planting trees in Kisauni
  5. Increased tree cover in Kisauni
  6. Women and youth groups are now empowered in skills such as proper waste management and recycling.
